Profile
Prof. Shimura received her Ph.D. in Art History from Waseda University, specializing in modern Japanese art history and the history of U.S. – Japanese artistic exchange. Her research revolves around the various aspects of modern and contemporary art arising from the confrontation of Japan and the West at international venues such as World Expositions. In recent years, she has been conducting research on the cultural diplomacy of the U.S. toward Japan during the Cold War era, in particular regarding exhibitions of antique Japanese art held in the U.S. during the 1950s.
